CONFORMAT meets ConCentric, likes what it sees

(CONFORMAT rolls over in bed, opens its eyes, and glances at the clock)

What the .. ? It's July already??

(CONFORMAT springs out of bed, bolts down some cereal, races for the bus incompletely dressed and promising to brush its teeth at work.  Arrives at CONFORMAT HQ to find a year's worth of mail piling up at the door.)

So, here at CONFORMAT HQ, we've been a little distracted - it's been an interesting year - but sometimes the universe looks at its random tables and rolls a good result for you.  We were contacted by the team at ConCentric Games: they are moving to a new, larger venue, could we help them fill the space?  To which we said "the heck yeah!" and a new plan was born.

This year, ConCentric Games is being held on September 27-28 at the Burnside Community Centre, and we're running the RPG stream to join the board and card games we already know and love them for.

So with this CONFORMAT-but-not-CONFORMAT there are obviously some pros and cons with this change:

  • Pro: it will be held over two days instead of just one.
  • Pro: there will be huge range of other games available to play when you aren't playing an RPG.
  • Pro: it's actually been organised and happening, which is more than you can say for us this year.

  • Con: it won't be called CONFORMAT

If, like us, you feel that the pros outweigh the cons, then you'll be as excited as we are to get on board the ConCentric train and join us for two days of board, card, _and_ role-playing games at ConCentric.

Countdown reaches the "woah, it's only a day away?" stage.

As the time for CONFORMing draws near, it's time for another update!

First things first, where last year we were split across two rooms in the German Club, this year we're up in the single large hall upstairs.  When you come into the club, the stairs are on the left just after the entrance.

Next, we're keeping the same price as last year - $15 for a day of CONFORMity, with a $5 discount for running games, to help cover the cost of hiring the venue.  And we'll look the other way for kids coming with Dads for a gaming Father's day :).

We've already mentioned that there's a crowd expected for Father's day lunch, so do try to plan around that.  The German Club's kitchen will be open until 3, but they're happy with us getting food brought in after that.  The main bar, on the other hand, will be open until 7, and to reduce the crush downstairs they'll open the upstairs bar for a couple of hours in the middle of the day.

Alright, back to getting yourselves organised.  Although you can still sign up for games on the day, do consider signing up ahead of time - you don't want people pulling out their games because they think no-one's interested!

For the time (tables) they are a-changing (a bit, compared to last year)

True CONFORMists, who hang on our every word and scrutinise each update in the minute detail that medieval scholastics devoted to pondering the number of angels that may dance on the head of a pin, will have already noticed that the schedule has a couple of differences from previous years.

In the past CONFORMAT has had a fairly straightforward setup with everything happening in 3-hour blocks.  This time around there have been a couple of GMs who asked if they could have a couple of longer sessions instead, and in the good old "run it up the flagpole and see if they salute" CONFORMAT attitude, we thought we'd give it a try.  And so you can see that the games have a bit of a mix between the 3 and 5 hour long sessions.

While these longer sessions overlap with two of the shorter ones, but even with strict 3-hour slots we always have to make choices between games that are going to overlap.  On this particular occasion there are some handy benefits to having this staggered timing.
  1. Everybody take note of this!  Because CONFORMAT falls on Father's Day, the kitchen at the German Club warned us that the bistro (out the front) is already booked up and service may be a bit slow.  If all the games finish at the same time and we tumble down to get lunch, then things are likely to get very delayed.
  2. Several people are bringing board or card games, or are demoing some miniatures games, so there will be things that you can do to fill in an hour here or there.
So when you are reading over the schedule and thinking about what you might sign up for, do bear in mind that maximising game time may risk going without food, and we all know that a hungry CONFORMer is a grouchy CONFORMer.

Pre-con opportunity to CONFORM

So you're sitting at home and looking for a way to delay working on your tax return.  Maybe you're wishing you had a way of participating in CONFORMAT ahead of the actual event?  Maybe you wish you had some company while there's nothing good on the telly?  Maybe you like playing around with paper, glue, and scissors?  Whatever the case, boy do we have a deal for you!

Presenting the papery machinations of the notorious Doctor Conformo!  Conformo has been working on an army of clones: take his design, print out on photo paper or card stock, cut-fold-glue and - hey presto! - another mindless thrall for the Doctor's legion.

CONFORMAT 2013 is go

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking, CONFORMist 1?"

"I think I am, CONFORMist 2"

"It's CONFORMAT time!"
(True story, that is actually about as intensive as our planning gets)
Yes, the rumours are true: in 2013 there will be yet another CONFORMAT.  Return once more to the German club on Sunday 1st September for another bout of gaming goodness.  The game schedule is beginning to fill out already, so don't be shy - step up and run a game.
Get those CONFORMing muscles warmed up, people, CONFORMAT is coming to town.
